Mount Semeru is the highest summit in Java, well known for its stunning scenery and challenging terrain and I have to admit that this is one of the famous mountain on this planet Earth that can hypnotized all of the people who visit it - Standing there at 3.676 meters above sea level, Mount. Semeru from distance surely looks very beautiful, majestic and magnificent.
The best thing about Mahameru (The great mountain) is you may literally feel the Earth move as Semeru send the cloud of volcanic sands into the air - this could happened every 15-30 minutes, the eruption cloud usually blown away by the wind and turning into clouds (?) :) - that is why, Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
There are two different route to access Mount Semeru:
The shortest route - it would take approximately two to three hours to reach Ranu Kumbolo, depending on your stamina levels, but this route is closed for unknown length of time.
Ranu Pane Route
The conventional route - it would take approximately three to four hours to reach Ranu Kumbolo, from this route, you will be able to enjoy the wilderness of this place, it is still very wild and quiet.
A friend of mine, @Faisalwidodo, @Fikribrillian, @Bimohendarto
and @Anggarandas tagged along as we tried to reach the summit. I must say, this was the most intensive, hardest, torturing summit I have ever made in my entire life, but it was definitely worth it, worth the pain, especially when you watched the sunrise from the top of Mount. Semeru, it was amazingly beautiful - also you can see another beautiful mountain such as Mount Raung, Mount Arjuna, Mount Welirang, and Mount Bromo from the top of it.
The sunrise, the other mountains, the cities, the Java’s coastline and the crater they all joining together to create a beautiful panoramic picture.
Overall: Climbing Semeru is one the the experience that I will never forget, one of the hardest summit I ever did, mentally and physically challenging - the sights are stunning, especially on the peak - feel the Earth moving, watching the volcanic ash thrown into the air was the highlight of this trip.
How to get there
Train - Book a train ticket to Malang (New Town Station)
Plane - Book a ticket to Surabaya or Malang *I suggest you book a flight ticket to Surabaya and continue to Malang by bus.
From Malang chart a car or motorbike to Ranu Pane its about 3 or 4 hours drive.
1. Gaiters, mask and trekking pole is a must!
2. Wind-breaker or jacket is a must! it is very cold there in Ranu Kumbolo or Kali Mati (place when you built a tent to stay overnight).
3. Hikers need to avoid poisonous gas emitted from volcano especially when the color is grey-brownish and black.
4. Hikers need to reach the summit before noon as the change of the wind directions switch the poisonous gas onto the climbing route.
